The Time is Ripe for Summer Farmers Markets!

,

One thing that most of us look forward to during the warm, summer months is the abundance of locally-grown, fresh fruits & vegetables. Ripe, juicy strawberries, sweet peaches & cream corn, and cool, refreshing blueberries are just some of the things that come to mind. And, I mean ‘some‘, because today’s farmers markets are more than just fruits & veg! They bring together the community, including artisans & entertainers, to create a lively, festive atmosphere that goes beyond just farm fresh food. Here are some of the top picks we recommend visiting this summer in Vancouver & Surrey:

Surrey Farmers Markets

InSeason Farmers Market

Brand new this year, the InSeason Farmers Market is open Thursdays from 2–7pm at Art’s Nursery (8940 192nd Street) in Port Kells, and runs from June 6 – October 3, 2013. Browse the offerings, and you’ll find natural and internationally inspired baking, honey from nearby hives, award-winning B.C. cheeses, crazy good preserves, and sauces for the connoisseur. Sounds like something worth checking out to me!

Surrey Urban Farmer’s Market

The Surrey Urban Farmers Market will be back again in the North Surrey Recreation Centre Courtyard every Wednesday from 1-6pm from June 12  – October 9, 2013. Located just steps from the Surrey Central Skytrain station, this farmers market has really blossomed over the years. Browse the extensive offerings of local meats, cheeses, vegetables, honey, and baked goods (hungry yet?) from over 25 vendors, while listening to local musicians sing & strum pleasant acoustic tunes.

Vancouver Farmers Markets

Vancouver is teeming with summer farmers markets! While smaller markets include the West End Farmers Market, Main Street Station Farmers Market, and Kerrisdale Farmers Market, the main attractions are:

Kitsilano Farmers Market

Make a trip to one of the most beloved neighbourhoods in Vancouver – Kitsilano – for a fun & festive farmers market that takes place every Sunday, May 12 – October 20, 2013 from 10am-2pm in the Kitsilano Community Centre parking lot. Listen to performances by remarkable local musicians, as you browse a bevy of  meat, cheese, seafood, baked goods and beautiful crafts. With a nearby playground and waterpark to enjoy on warm, summer days, there’s plenty of reasons to head down and explore what’s on offer. Plus, the Bicycle Valet will be available for those who wheel down!

Trout Lake Farmers Market

Happening each Saturday, May 11 – October 19, 2013 from 9am – 2pm in Trout Lake Park, this is one farmers market you won’t want to miss! Established in 1995, the market features a wealth of produce, meat, cheese, seafood and prepared foods!  Browse high-quality local crafts, listen to live music, get a balloon animal made (who are we kidding those things are awesome no matter what age you are!) and get your (kid’s) face-painted! Plus, Rover is more than welcome to come with, as there is a nearby off-leash dog park, and a wonderful lakeside trail to walk along. The Bicycle Valet is also on-site.

White Rock Farmers Market

Head south to the seaside town of White Rock each Sunday from 9am-1pm for the White Rock Farmers Market. Running May 26 – October 13 at Miramar Plaza, this spirited event will feature 70 vendors on opening day, who represent their  “MAKE, BAKE or GROW” policy. As well as live music from local musicians, the market will also have a holistic nutritionist on site-to to perform free health assessments.
