Kick It with the Vancouver Whitecaps!

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC is having a great season so far. At least part of the credit has to go to the fans, who get into the games with big cheers, lots of noise and plenty of positive energy (the Whitecaps actually have two regular fan clubs at their games, the Southsiders and the Rain City Brigade, to get the party started). When I go to a game at B.C. Place, that’s a big part of the fun: sure, the fast-paced play on the field entertains, but in between goals, you’ve got some great energy to keep you pumped up!

I got a chance this week to chat with Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency player, Spencer DeBoice – a 5’9″, 137-lb midfielder known as “one to watch” according to a recent profile by Canadian Soccer News. This homegrown, 19-year old Surrey B.C. resident deftly kicked some answers back my way:

What’s it like playing for the Whitecaps’ Residency team?

Spencer. “It’s been such a good experience. My game has gotten better over the years and I’m excited to see where that takes me. I’m a winger, an attacking player and this season, I’ve been getting goals in my pockets. It’s great to be producing for the team!”

How did you get your start as a soccer player?

Spencer. I’ve been playing since grade two, so I guess it’s been a long time. My mom got me into soccer in the first place and I’ve stayed close to my soccer buddies over the years. I started playing on the Guilford Athletic Club – then it was Surrey Guilford United. I played with the provincial team as well, so it was a few years before I got the call-up for the Whitecaps. When I got into the Whitecaps Residency, it went right into a more professional atmosphere. It’s inspiring. You just have to bring up your game at all levels!

How do you explain the growing popularity of Whitecaps soccer and the sport in general?

Spencer. For me, it’s the best sport in the world. It’s a beautiful game –and people here are starting to realize what a great sport it is and how great the atmosphere is!
